It's unfortunate that so much money is being spent on monitoring methane which comprises a negligible part of Earth's atmosphere (1.9 ppm based on most recent data or 0.00019%).
I agree, Nemeth. But isn't the entire "renewables" scam a waste of money? No doubt the strategy is to throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and see if any of it sticks. Unfortunately, there seems to be an unlimited amount of money out there to fund whatever scam comes next. Great comment. Thanks! Ed
As they witness a satellite whiz by on the U.S.S. Enterprise, I can hear Captain Kirk tell Spock, "There was a methane hoax in the 21st century. That satellite we saw could be what was launched on a Musk sponsored rocket which malfunctioned and got lost. It was used to measure methane effect on Earth's climate. Uhura reports that Trump was POTUS at the time during a falling out between the two. "I wonder if........? Nah couldn't be.......".
Spock's reply, "Sorry, Vulcans are logical thinkers; this one is a head-scratcher.
Jon, my exact instruction to Grok was: "I think that the NRDC methane detecting satellite being lost in space is funny. Write a funny essay on it." Then, 2 seconds later, it sent what I published. I was amazed at how fast it was to create a 1,000-word essay. Ed
I wonder if DEI was involved in any part of the personnel selection. And what if the satellite disclosed data that didn't fit the narrative of why it was put into orbit in the first place? Reminds me of the Mars mission where the satellite crashed into Mars because some forgot to convert miles into kilometers, or was it the other way around. Whatever.
PS One of the moons of Jupiter has an ocean of liquid methane.
Jeff, I'm sure the EDF thinks they have donors with unlimited funds, which apparently is the case with the likes of Jeff Bezos, who can blow $50 million on a wedding. Funding another MethaneSAT is pocket change. Ed
Methane Sat wasn't the only Earth observation satellite focused on methane. The EU has it covered with its Sentinel satellites: https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Trio_of_Sentinel_satellites_map_methane_super-emitters

How about this humorous scenario:
As they witness a satellite whiz by on the U.S.S. Enterprise, I can hear Captain Kirk tell Spock, "There was a methane hoax in the 21st century. Great writing there, Terry! Thanks, Ed
THERE GOES EDF’s REVENUE STEAM.
True, how true, Stephen! Ed
Just curious...what prompt did you use to get Grok to generate the humor portion of this post? I agree, its impressive!
Jon, my exact instruction to Grok was: "I think that the NRDC methane detecting satellite being lost in space is funny. Write a funny essay on it." Then, 2 seconds later, it sent what I published. I was amazed at how fast it was to create a 1,000-word essay. Ed
Amazing!

“ The EDF called it a “setback, not a failure,” ”
Whoever made that statement was not the person stoking the signature in the check!!
Jeff, I'm sure the EDF thinks they have donors with unlimited funds, which apparently is the case with the likes of Jeff Bezos, who can blow $50 million on a wedding. Funding another MethaneSAT is pocket change. Ed
Pocket change each year and pretty quick you have real money!!
