Energy Factoid: Department of Energy Says Natural Gas is Lowest Cost Home Energy Source
The lowest-cost home energy source is natural gas, according to the Department of Energy in their annual baseline residential energy cost comparison published in the Federal Register. In the 2022 report, natural gas is 3.4 times more affordable than electricity and significantly more affordable than other residential energy sources for the same amount of energy delivered:
Natural Gas $12.09 per million Btu
Heating Oil $25.11 per million Btu
Propane $24.46
Kerosene $29.73
Electricity $41.79
